Osteoporosis
Detecting Osteoporosis
• Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and are more likely to break. Osteoporosis can cause height loss and stooped posture, and can result in a loss of mobility and independence. If detected, osteoporosis can be treated by your physician with prescription medication.
• The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends bone density testing for all women over age 65, or those with multiple risk factors.
• Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) measures bone mineral density in the spine and hip. It is an easy, painless and highly accurate test completed in minutes, with minimal radiation.
