Anesthesiologists provide drugs called anesthetics for the relief of
pain during surgery. An anesthesiologist may choose either a local
anesthetic or a general anesthetic depending on the patient and the
nature of the operation. During an operation in which a general
anesthetic is used, the anesthesiologist is responsible for monitoring
and maintaining safe levels of the patient's bodily functions, such as
heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate.
We can also treat patients in extreme or chronic pain, such as cancer
victims and people in intensive care units. This specialized form of
anesthesiologists is often referred to as pain
management. Some anesthesiologists specialize in the care of
critical care patients who have suffered serious injuries such as
shock, heart attack, drug overdose, and massive bleeding.
