Advanced Imaging and Radiation Therapies Enhance Oncology Services

On Board Imaging, 4-D Respiratory Gating Now Available at Jefferson Regional Medical Center

Jefferson Hills, PA - March 31, 2010

Patients can now receive the same advanced imaging and radiation therapies found at UPMC Cancer Centers’ flagship, Hillman Cancer Center, conveniently located in the South Hills. The Radiation Oncology Center at Jefferson Regional Medical Center, a program of Jefferson Regional Medical Center and UPMC Cancer Centers, recently added state-of-the-art diagnostic technology upgrades to its suite of radiation oncology services to further enhance the treatment options available to cancer patients.

On Board Imaging (OBI) makes it possible to take 3-D images of the patient’s body before and after radiation treatment, providing a detailed view of the body. This enables adjustments to the treatment beam to be made in real-time, based on the patient’s minor, involuntary movements. This ensures the patient and the tumor are at the same position as planned originally so the treatment is as precise as possible.

The Jefferson Regional location also offers 4-D respiratory gating – a technology that tracks any movement of the tumor or organs due to the patient’s breathing cycle. This precise tracking allows the radiation oncologist to target the tumor at an optimal part of the patient’s breathing cycle. This means more precise treatment and greater control to avoid damaging healthy tissue.

These services are available for cancer patients in a quiet suburban setting with reserved parking just a few feet from the entrance of the facility. Patients experience an atmosphere conducive to healing and the benefits of UPMC Cancer Centers at a convenient location closer to home.

For more information about these services, contact the Radiation Oncology Center at Jefferson Regional Medical Center, a program of Jefferson Regional Medical Center and UPMC Cancer Centers, at 412-267-6300.
