Stroke is the third leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability in America, according to the National Stroke Association
During May, which is National Stroke Awareness Month, Jefferson Regional Medical Center’s Stroke Outreach Program will sponsor a free community event on Wednesday, May 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the hospital’s 2nd floor lobby area.
The purpose of the event is to increase awareness of the prevalence of stroke. Free blood pressure checks, educational materials about stroke signs and symptoms and healthy snacks will be available. A drawing for a free automatic blood pressure cuff will be conducted. No registration is necessary.
The Stroke Outreach Program will continue its series of Community Stroke Risk Screenings on Saturday, June 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (last appointment at 1:30 p.m.) in the social hall of Christ the Light of the World Parish, 32 South First St., Duquesne. No insurance is needed. Ages 18 and up are welcome.
The screening includes a stroke risk assessment survey, blood pressure check, finger stick blood sample for HDL, total cholesterol and blood sugar levels, carbon monoxide testing for smokers, body fat analysis, educational materials and counseling. Light refreshments and giveaways will be provided. Clinical support is provided by Duquesne University. Advanced registration is preferred by calling Community Programs at 412-469-7100.
