JEFFERSON REGIONAL OFFERS WINTER COMPUTER CLASSES FOR SENIORS
Jefferson Hills, PA - December 02, 2009

Jefferson Regional Senior Services will start the new year with a full schedule of computer classes available to men and women ages 50 and up, beginning in January. Two-day computer classes on different topics will be held on specified dates at the James Bibro Pavilion on the Jefferson Regional Medical Center campus, 565 Coal Valley Road, Jefferson Hills. The fee for each two-session class is $45.

 

To enhance learning, all classes are limited to 10 students, so early registration is advised. Free parking is provided in the Bibro lot. Contact Senior Services at 412-469-7099 to register. The schedule of classes is as follows:

 

Buying and Selling on eBay

Jan. 18 & 25, or May 3 & 10, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Prerequisite: Basic Computers 1 & 2 and Internet knowledge

This course will provide hands-on experience with registration, searching, bidding and buying on eBay. The second half of the course will discuss the basics of setting up auctions, making sound purchases, avoiding fraud and will illustrate the importance of choosing the right payment methods. Students will learn to navigate eBay to comfortably shop and sell and they will list and bid on items.

 

Basic Digital Cameras 1 & 2

Feb. 1 & 8, or May 18 & 25, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Prerequisite: Basic Computers 1 & 2 or equivalent knowledge.

This class is divided into two, two-hour sessions to provide plenty of time to practice using digital cameras. This digital camera class teaches the basics of buying a camera and how to use it. Participants will learn how to take digital pictures, transfer pictures to the computer, edit photographs and send photos to friends and relatives. Digital cameras are provided for use in class.

 

Microsoft Excel (Making Financials Easier) 1 & 2

Feb. 4 & 11, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Prerequisite:  Basic Computers 1 & 2 or equivalent knowledge.

Whether it’s balancing your checkbook, putting together the family budget or generating charts for work, Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program that can track and manage data, addresses, financials, and more to turn data into useful information. Students will learn how to perform detailed calculations, sort data and create colorful charts and graphs.

 

Basic Computers 1 & 2

Feb. 15 & 22, or March 24 & 31, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

No previous computer knowledge is required.

Basic Computers 1 & 2 will provide hands-on experience. The first class will explain how to turn a computer on and off, the basic functions of the mouse and keyboard, how to use Windows, search menus and more. The second class will provide time for review and progress to understanding scroll bars, using drop-down menus and other ways to interact with a computer.

 

Searching the Internet 1 & 2

March 1 & 8, or April 7 & 14, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Prerequisite: Basic Computers 1 & 2 or equivalent knowledge.

Searching the Internet will provide hands-on experience. The first class will explain the basics of search engines and browsers, how to connect to the Internet and navigate the World Wide Web. The second class will discuss browsers in more detail, how to download programs, search more effectively and avoid viruses.

 

E-mail 1 & 2

Mondays, March 15 & 22, or April 21 & 28, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Prerequisite: Basic Computers 1 & 2 and Searching the Internet

This class will teach the basics of e-mail. Find out how e-mail works and learn to read, write, send, forward, and reply to messages. The second class will provide time for review; explore setting up an address book, sending to multiple recipients, sending attachments and more. This class will be taught using Outlook Express.

 

Basic Computers 3 & 4

March 29 & April 5, or May 5 & 12, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Prerequisite: Basic Computers 1 & 2 or equivalent knowledge.

This class offers hands-on experience practicing the fundamental. Participants will learn how to easily save information, find it, create shortcuts, install new programs and customize the computer to fit specific needs.
