Heart Institute
The Heart Institute at Jefferson Regional Medical Center is led by a team of renowned cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, nurses and support staff. The Heart Institute features two cardiothoracic and vascular operating and recovery rooms, three cardiac catheterization labs, and a new 10-bed cardiovascular unit. State-of-the-art heart monitors, heart-lung pumps and cardiac catheterization cameras will be installed.


Scope of Services

The following surgical services are performed at the Heart Institute at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.
  • Cardiac Surgery: Coronary artery bypass and valvular surgery including repair/replacement, minimally invasive coronary artery bypass/valvular surgeries, port access coronary artery bypass and valvular surgery, and adult congenital surgery.
  • General Thoracic Surgery: Pulmonary resections, chest wall reconstruction, and diagnostic procedures including bronchoscopy, mediastinoscopy, mediastinal disease treatment, tracheal surgery, andthoracoscopy video-assisted procedure (diagnostic/therapeutic).
  • Major Vessel Surgery: Ascending, arch and thoraco-abdominal surgery.
  • Peripheral Vascular Surgery: Abdominal aortic aneurysms, aorto-femoral bypass, femoral-popliteal/tibial bypass, carotid surgery, endovascular surgery (stent-PTCA).
  • Esophageal Surgery
  • Pacemaker/AICD

Medical Director and Surgeons

Sang B. Park, MD, a cardiothoracic surgeon, is the medical director of The Heart Institute. Dr. Park has more than 35 years of experience as a cardiothoracic surgeon and was a pioneer in developing new surgical techniques for coronary artery bypass, aortic, and heart valve aortic procedures. His practice, the Park Cardiothoracic and Vascular Institute, combines the skills of 5 board-certified cardiothoracic surgeons to perform the full spectrum of surgical interventions for patients with heart, lung, major vessel, and vascular diseases.

He is a graduate of the National University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Medicine and Post-Graduate School in Surgery, Seoul, Korea. Dr. Park completed his internship at Roger Williams General Hospital, Providence, a residency in general surgery at the former Columbia Hospital, Pittsburgh and a residency in thoracic surgery at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. He is the former director of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery for a major Pittsburgh medical center.

Venkat Machiraju, MD, is an experienced cardiothoracic surgeon with an excellent reputation. He is dedicated to helping to develop an outstanding clinical cardiac surgery program at The Heart Institute at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Machiraju established RAJ Cardiovascular Association in Pittsburgh in 1980. He and his associates perform the latest cardiovascular, thoracic and vascular procedures, including minimally invasive techniques for bypass and mitral valve replacement surgeries.

He is a graduate of the Medical School at Andhra University, Guntar, India and completed an internship in thoracic surgery at J.C.M. Hospital, Dublin, Ireland; a residency in general surgery at French & Poly Clinic Health Center, New York and one in thoracic surgery at Newark Beth Israel Hospital, Newark. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Chet Phitayakorn, MD, is a thoracic-vascular surgeon at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. A well-respected member of the medical community, Dr. Phitayakorn brings nearly 30 years of experience to The Heart Institute staff.

Before opening his practice at Jefferson Hospital in 1984, he was an associate with Thoracovascular Associates, Pittsburgh, for eight years. Dr. Phitayakorn graduated from the University of Medical Sciences at Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand, and completed internships at Siriraj Hospital and Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia. His residencies were at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh; The Western Pennsylvania Hospital, Pittsburgh and Texas Heart Institute, Houston.
